Planning on moving to La Jolla? It’s sure to be a consideration if you have aging parents – what will they do?
There are choices of course. You could buy a home big enough that they could live with you. You could add a granny wing …
La Jolla is lucky to have a choice of two!
The first is Casa de Mañana (House of Tomorrow) located at 849 Coast Boulevard, La Jolla, directly opposite from the Childrens Pool – looking at the aerial photo below, it takes up the whole triangular block:
Casa de Mañana has a fascinating history. Mrs. Isabel Morrison Hopkins had a grand vision and on July 4, 1924, the Hotel Casa de Mañana had its grand opening, with picturesque arches, tiled roofs and authentic Spanish architecture designed by the famed Irving Gill. The hotel became the social hub of La Jolla.

In 1953 the hotel was sold. Soon after Casa de Mañana opened as a luxurious retirement community with 108 charter members in residence. The complex recently underwent extensive renovations, including the construction of addition space over subterranean parking.
The second community is know as White Sands, located at the southern end of Coast Boulevard at 7450 Olivetas Avenue, La Jolla. This luxury facility, run by the be.group is directly on the sand as you can see from the aerial – it’s the large red roofed building shaped like an “E”.
The White Sands also underwent construction of additional space. In the photo below you can see that construction had already started.
In this image below, the addition space next to Olivitas has been completed providing much needed amenities and additional accommodation.
So there you have it, two great choices for leisurely retirement in La Jolla on the ocean. Later years wouldn’t get any better than this, in one of the worlds greatest climates.
