La Jolla initially grew very slowly, as new lot owners started to built homes over a century ago.
One of these oceanfront lots (now 7348 Vista del Mar), was purchased by Rex B. and Grace Scripps Clark in 1920. Grace was the niece of Ellen Browning Scripps (see note below) and Virginia Scripps, noted La Jolla philanthropists. The Clark’s built a beautiful home and named it “Casa del Lido”.

In 1940, the home was deeded to Grace’s daughter, Ellen Clark Revelle and her husband, Dr. Roger R. Revelle. The Revelle’s subsequently took up permanent residence in the home in 1947.
Here is the house today now surrounded by other homes.
Casa del Lido and its beautiful grounds served as a fabulous venue for entertaining Nobel Prize-winning academics & dignitaries from all around the world.
This beautiful La Jolla home sold for $8,500,000

Dr. Roger Randall Dougan Revelle (March 7, 1909 — July 15, 1991) was a giant of a man at 6 foot 4 inches. He also had a huge impact on San Diego as the father of the UCSD general campus on La Jolla’s borders.
Dr. Revelle’s most meaningful achievement was the recruitment of world-class scientists to come and join its faculty – for their names lured other outstanding people to come. Their prestige attracted money for research grants and superior students to enroll.
At one time UCSD’s faculty had eight Nobel laureates and 50 members of the National Academy of Sciences. UC San Diego’s first college is named Revelle College in his honor.
Revelle was an oceanographer for the Navy during WWII. Subsequently a long time Director of the Scripps Institute of Oceanograph, which today is part of UC San Diego.
He was one of the first scientists to study global warming and the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates. He was also
BTW Interesting to note that it was It was Ellen Browning Scripps who originally founded Scripps with a grant of $50,000 way back in 1903.
