Bird Rock is named for the large white rock just offshore, where birds gather.
There are a good local La Jolla shops and restaurants on La Jolla Boulevard, much more popular after the City re-engineered the busy Boulevard slowing the traffic making it more pedestrian friendly.
The beach is ideal for diving and surfing. Tourmaline Beach – small scenic sandy beach a favorite with surfers and divers.
Swimming however, is not allowed.
Parks at Bird Rock include La Jolla Hermosa Park at the intersection of (Camino de la Costa and Chelsea Avenue) and Calumet Park on Calumet Avenue.
